African Shaddock

Other sweet orange trees (the familiar old seedling type) were also imported from India. At the time the St Helena trees bore their first fruit, Van Riebeeck had 1 162 young citrus trees growing in his garden - the first South African orchard, containing an interesting assortment of seedling oranges, lemons and the Citrus maxima, known as bombolmoes in Tamil, pampelmoes in Dutch, and known to the British as the pummelo or Shaddock, after Captain Shaddock who introduced it to the West Indies where its bud mutation, the grapefruit, first developed.

This giant citrus (citrus grandus) fruit is native to Malaysia (where it still grows abundantly).  It is also cultivated in California and Israel.  Most of the varieties found today have been bred and grown.  A large pomelo is the largest of all citrus.   They can grow to be as large as a foot in diameter and up to 25 pounds.  The rind is very thick but soft and easy to peel away.  The resulting fruit is light yellow to coral-pink flesh  and can vary from juicy to slightly dry and from seductively spicy-sweet to tangy and tart.  The pomelo is also known as a shaddock.

  • Grapefruits are probably arose as a hybrid between sweet orange and pomelo (Shaddock) in Jamaica and long known as the forbidden fruit!
A Captain Shaddock introduced pomelo to Barbados in 1696.
There are four horticultural types, all due to mutations from a single clone:
    • white flesh and seedy, the original grapefruit ('Duncan')
    • white flesh and seedless ('Marsh')
    • pink and seedless ('Thompson')
    • pink-red and seedless ('Redblush').
The reddish seedless grapefruit now completely dominates the market.
More high quality grapefruit is grown in Texas than Florida because of the higher temperatures.
In Florida, early grapefruit were induced to bear early by spraying with arsenic to induce peel injury and thus ethylene production, one of the best kept secrets of the grapefruit industry.
