Australian Finger Lime

Australian Finger Lime (Microcitrus australasica) Australian finger limes are close relatives to citrus. Depending on the type of rootstock used, the Australian finger lime grows into a very small to medium-sized tree. The leaves are tiny at approximately one-half inch long and the branches become very spiny with about 1 thorn set in every leaf axil.  New growth is purple in color and the flowers are white and pink during the main flowering season of May-July. The finger limes are about three inches long and around the size of an average person’s index finger.  Once the fruit is cut open the tiny round juice vesicles will slowly roll out of the fruit without squeezing, and resemble what we like to call “citrus caviar”.  The juice is very tart, much like a Mexican lime.  The “citrus caviar” is used mainly as a garnish. Although the tree produces fruit year round, the main fruiting season in California is November-December when the internal reddish color is the most vivid and the fruit falls off in your hand.

Our Australian Finger lime plants are the variety Alstonville Green Seedless. The plants are mature to the point of flowering and producing fruit. This plant is not cold hardy and loves heat, heat and humidity are even better. Great for growing in a greenhouse are atrium window in your home. The fruit of this plant makes it a real conversation piece.

Tree size & characteristics: This is a large, tall growing broad tree with moderately dense foliage. A highly productive bearer of excellent fruit.
Fruit size: Length: 3 to 7 inches
Diameter: 3/4 to 1 inch
Fruit color: Mostly brown with green tinges on smooth skin. Generally seedless but odd seeds do occur. Juice vesicles are 3mm in size and light green in color.
Fruit flavor: A crisp palatable flavor, very refreshing!
