Bergamot (Citrus bergamia)

The Bergamot orange is thought to be a cross between a sour orange and the Palestinian sweet lime, producing a very bitter and acid fruit with a high juice content and many seeds. Bergamot is used almost exclusively for the essential oils it yields, some of which forms the basis of perfumes and are also used in Aromatherapy treatments. Bergamot oil is sometimes used to flavor tobacco and is an ingredient in Earl Grey Tea. The tree is fairly vigorous and yields fruit well. The fruits can be sued in place of limes or lemons.

Bergamot is believed to be of hybrid ancestry, with sour orange and citron as the parents. The tree is small to medium at maturity, thorn less, and somewhat spreading in habit. The fruit is medium in size and variable in shape with obovoid most commonly occurring form. The yellow rind has a slightly rough texture and a distinctive rind oil. This oil is used commercially to flavor Earl Grey tea and as a component in perfumes, with Italy producing the majority of the world's supply. The fruits contain few seeds and are monoembryonic in nature. The flesh is pale yellow, acidic, and has a moderate juice content. The season of maturity is late winter.
