Big Bear Paws

Bears dig their claws deep into the bark and cambium of this tree. My fingers are in the grooves of the where the bear claws have dug the deepest. 

Carrying a gun is always a matter of personal choice, but only a fool or someone who has the hand of God protecting them goes very far into the mountains without one. I myself don't hunt for anything other than good pictures and ladybugs, but personal protection is a must. 

Near this area a woman was mauled by a mountain lion, saved by two guys with pocket knives. Lucky for those guys that the lion with was in ill health and chose to flee.

Actually the most dangerous thing in the Sierra mountains is Mexican Mafia sponsored marijuana growers. If you happen to come across a plantation, do yourself a favor and just turn around. The bigger the plants the more quickly you should haul butt out of there. Local resident growers are never happen to have you in their plantings but these guys will shoot children or adults with nothing more than a casual thought.
