Distant Drums Shrub Rose

Distant Drums is a mutable bloom, depending on the age of the flower and the weather. The dark mulberry buds open to reveal a surprise: a golden heart of smaller petals. It is exquisite at that time; the petals shimmer and seem unreal, like porcelain. How the flower ages is another story. Sometimes it finishes as an ordinary silver-pink and other times an ugly parchment color. They often end up looking like old, soggy teabags.

The flowers last a long time on the bush, up to five days.

Name: Distant Drums
Class: Modern Shrub Rose
Hybridizer/Date: Dr. Griffith J. Buck, USA 1984
Parentage: September Song x The Yeoman
Fragrance: Myrrh
ARS Color: Mauve Blend (mauve and orange and pink)

More Info

(1985) Mauve shrub. The ovoid-pointed buds of pale cyclamen purple (RHSCC 74C) open to double (35-45 petals), imbricated, open, 4-5 inch blooms of rose purple (RHSCC 75D) which are tinted golden tan (RHSCC 164C) paling to gray lavender and tan with age. The blooms are borne in clusters of 1-10 and have an intense myrrh fragrance. The medium-large, abundant foliage is dark green and leathery. The thorns are brown and awl-like. The vigorous, erect plant is bushy and blooms from mid Spring until killing frost. The plants are winter-hardy in the Midwest and the rest of the colder climates of the Country without protection.
